With bristling cynicism, surrealistic word-play,
and a decidedly post-modern veneer couched in eclectic song
arrangements, Andy McCutcheon tears through rock’s back pages to
create a distinctive impression that is reflective, stylish,
twisted, and captivating.
From the freewheeling jangle-pop of “Hello,” to the neo-psychedelic
rumblings oozing from “I’m Alive Now,” to the angular lounge lizard
musings embedded in “Twisting And Reeling,” Andy McCutcheon exudes
irony and passion.
Akin to the artistry of Elvis Costello, XTC, Phantom Planet, Robyn
Hitchcock, Lloyd Cole, Syd Barrett, and Brian Wilson, McCutcheon
tantalizes the senses with an array of emotional depth, a whirlpool
mixture of instrumental textures, and astute observations of the
human condition molded into splashing pop melodies.
This 4 song primer is an exciting, strong primer of an introduction
to what could blossom into a very fine pop talent for Not Lame
types. The 3 songs here (plus an extended version of the title
track) highlight the best of mid-90`s pop in the Blur school of
Brit-pop. Add some clean, crisp 70`s glammy Bolan-esque strummings,
you have a winner! There's an excellent cover of The Cars "My Best
Friend`s Girlfriend" that Not Lame, had we had known about
McCutcheon earlier, would have been on our Cars` tribute. McCutcheon
tantalizes the senses with an array of emotional depth, a whirlpool
mixture of instrumental textures, and astute observations of the
human condition molded into splashing pop melodies. "McCutcheon's
gift for melodic hooks and his uncanny ability to emulate classic
rock heroes (early David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Lou Reed, Ian Hunter &
The Doors) adds up to a collection of original glam-edelic tunes!" -
